Higher-for-longer squeeze
45%Inflation stays sticky, the Fed keeps hiking and the 30-year sits at 5.5–6.5%. Stress breaks out in rate-sensitive credit in 2027–28 — a slowdown with inflation, not deflation.
In May 2026 we wrote down a thesis: the cycle runs late, tops in 2027, cracks in 2028, and rebuilds around 2030. This page keeps the original expectations fixed and records what actually happened, so the thesis is graded in public instead of quietly rewritten.

Bitcoin cycle now: Accumulation since May 7, 2026, per our Crypto Cycle Index.
The Cycle Index only says where Bitcoin is now. This lays the next phases out on the spacing of the last 3 full cycles (starting 2015, 2019, 2023). Each window runs from the fastest past cycle to the slowest. It is a pattern, not a forecast, and it moves as each turn actually happens.
What would start the next phase: Bull Run begins when the 20-week average crosses above the 50-week average while price holds above its 200-day average. The 20-week is now 6.8% below the 50-week, and price is 15.7% above the 200-day average.
What would set it back: A decisive break below the cycle low of $59,963 would send it back to Bottoming. Price is now 40.1% above that low.
Where this disagrees with the thesis. The thesis expects the top in Mar 2027 – Jun 2027 and a credit crack in 2028. The cycle rhythm puts the top in Jul 2028 – Apr 2029, which would make 2027–2028 a bull market. That is our “Four-year cycle repeats” scenario, which we give 30%. The reviews will show which one is playing out.
Our judgement at the Oct 16, 2026 review.
Inflation stays sticky, the Fed keeps hiking and the 30-year sits at 5.5–6.5%. Stress breaks out in rate-sensitive credit in 2027–28 — a slowdown with inflation, not deflation.
Inflation cools in 2027, the Fed eases, and Bitcoin follows its post-halving pattern into a 2029 top. A 2027 exit would be too early.
The AI-capex bust and IPO supply cause a deflationary credit crack in 2028, followed by emergency easing — but probably without a euphoric 2027 crypto top first.
AI bid and the CLARITY Act carry crypto higher; Bitcoin dominance starts falling as money rotates into altcoins.
Signal: BTC dominance falling
CLARITY stalled in the Senate. Bitcoin had already topped in late 2025 and spent the period bottoming, then building a base; dominance stayed near 59%.
AI-driven white-collar layoffs make headlines and jobless claims start drifting up.
Signal: Claims drifting up
AI-attributed layoffs are real and in the headlines, but jobless claims are near 197k — not visible in the aggregate data yet. The Fed raised rates on Sep 17 instead of cutting.
Tesla/SpaceX merger talk and OpenAI/Anthropic S-1 filings soak up the marginal dollar.
Signal: BTC dominance below 42%
Early signs: both labs filed confidential draft S-1s. As of Oct 14, 2026 Anthropic was courting investors for a reported November listing, ahead of schedule, while OpenAI's IPO was pointing to 2027.
Retail euphoria; altcoins against Bitcoin hit an all-time high — the cycle top.
Signal: Weekly RSI above 80 with a bearish divergence
Bitcoin’s four-year rhythm suggests its top already came in 2025. A 2027 top now needs the cycle to break pattern.
IPO lockups expire; insiders sell into retail.
Signal: High-yield spreads above 5%

Private-credit defaults and bank stress.
Signal: High-yield spreads above 8%

Debt-deflation depression; stocks fall 50% or more and layoffs cascade.
Signal: Sustained deflation

A new monetary regime and a generational buying window.

Sworn in; dovish on rates, hawkish on the balance sheet.
Sworn in May 18, 2026.
Rate cuts while the balance sheet keeps shrinking.
No cuts. The Fed raised rates 0.25 pt on Sep 17, 2026 (to 3.75–4.00%) with the balance sheet flat to slightly up; after September CPI came in at 3.7% on Oct 14, futures priced about a 42% chance of another hike on Oct 28.
Signed into law (prediction markets ~69%); bullish BTC, ETH, SOL.
Senate vote to open debate failed 49–50 on Sep 15, 2026. Odds of signing in 2026 fell to single digits; earliest now 2027.
Headlines start, confirming the early-warning phase.
Headlines yes (Salesforce, Accenture, Uber and others cite AI), and the Fed's Oct 14, 2026 Beige Book said some firms in five districts cut staff or hiring after investing in AI. Jobless claims stayed below 200k for a fifth straight week.
Public filings prime the IPO “liquidity sponge”.
Confidential drafts filed (OpenAI May 22, Anthropic Jun 1). By Oct 14, 2026 Anthropic had held a pre-IPO investor day aiming to list before Thanksgiving, but no public S-1 was on EDGAR yet, and OpenAI's IPO was pointing to 2027.
Merger rumours start the rotation out of risk.
Nothing filed and no talks confirmed as of Oct 16, 2026. Barclays said this week that a merger could be announced before Tesla's annual meeting (due by Dec 6), and Musk posted 'Tesla x SpaceX' on Oct 16 to promote a joint Roadster demo.
Altcoins against Bitcoin go parabolic.

The 10y–2y curve turns positive and steepens.
Already happened before the thesis was written: positive since Sep 6, 2024.
Not in the original thesis. Past bull runs peaked 12–18 months after a halving.

Private-credit funds gate or default.
Early signs in 2026: semi-liquid private-credit funds held withdrawals to their 5% quarterly caps all year, and on Oct 13, 2026 Fitch said average BDC withdrawal requests eased to 9.8% in Q3, still above the cap. There were no broad defaults, and high-yield spreads stayed near 3.2%.

Every two weeks a review is drafted from sourced news and live data, then published only once we approve it.
A quiet two weeks for the thesis. September CPI came in at 3.7% and the odds of another Fed hike rose. OpenAI moved its IPO to 2027 while Anthropic courted investors for a November listing, Barclays said a Tesla–SpaceX deal could come before December, and private-credit withdrawal requests stayed above the 5% caps while high-yield spreads stayed calm. Scenario odds are unchanged.
First expected-vs-actual review. Inflation came first (Fed hike, 30-year at 5.67%), CLARITY failed, and Bitcoin looks to have topped in 2025. Scenario odds set.
